Silicon carbon balls are an alloy of silicon and carbon, also known as high carbon silicon, or ferrosilicon with a high carbon content. The silicon carbon alloy is crushed and mixed with silicon powder and other raw materials according to a specific ratio, then pressed into balls to make it more suitable for steelmaking and casting.
Silicon carbon balls are one of the most widely used smelting materials. They provide excellent deoxidation and inoculation, and can also serve as a reducing agent. They can optimize molten steel quality and improve product quality. They also reduce the amount of alloy added, lowering steelmaking costs, increasing economic benefits, and reducing worker intensity.
Functions of Silicon Carbon Balls:
1. Deoxidation. Using silicon carbon balls in the steelmaking industry can reduce deoxidation time by 10-30%. Silicon has a very stable affinity for oxygen, forming silicon dioxide.
2. Silicon carbon balls can quickly reduce the oxygen content in molten steel, thereby reducing oxides in the steel, improving its purity, and enhancing steel quality. Therefore, silicon-carbon balls are also used to reduce slag.
3. Silicon carbon spheres are used in casting to promote graphite crystallization and spheroidal graphite formation, improving casting quality and significantly reducing nozzle blockage.
Production of Silicon carbon spheres:
When smelting high carbon steel in a converter, alloys and recarburizers are typically added to the steel flow or at the bottom of the ladle during tapping to achieve carburization and deoxidation. Therefore, Silicon carbon spheres are pressed into spheres, typically 10-50 mm in diameter. These spheres have a high specific gravity and act as deoxidizers when added to molten steel, increasing carbon recovery and stability. They also facilitate transportation and storage.
Silicon carbon powder, binder, and water are mixed thoroughly and then loaded into a briquetting machine. The spheres are then placed in a dryer or air-dried.
