High carbon ferrosilicon, also known as silicon carbon alloy, is primarily composed of silicon and carbon; common specifications include grades such as 6515 and 6818. As the name implies, it features a high carbon content and is frequently utilized in steelmaking furnaces.

High carbon silicon serves as a novel, potent composite deoxidizer suitable for smelting general and ordinary carbon steels. Composed mainly of silicon and carbon, it benefits from the high reactivity and rapid reaction rate of silicon, which also helps raise furnace temperatures. Consequently, high carbon silicon can replace the more expensive traditional heating agents typically required in converter and open-hearth steelmaking.

As a commonly used deoxidizer, high carbon ferrosilicon offers distinct advantages. Since carbon and silicon are critical elements determining steel properties, high carbon silicon not only reacts with oxygen in the molten steel to achieve deoxidation but also dissolves the unoxidized carbon and silicon into the melt, thereby increasing the steel's silicon and carbon content. Adding a specific amount of silicon significantly enhances the steel's strength, hardness, and elasticity, effectively serving a dual purpose. Deoxidation is essential in steelmaking; given the strong chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen, high carbon ferrosilicon acts as a powerful deoxidizer, facilitating both precipitation and diffusion deoxidation processes.
