Ferro silicon is an iron alloy composed of iron and silicon. Ferro silicon is an iron-silicon alloy that is smelted in an electric furnace from coke, scrap steel and seasoning (or silicon dioxide). Ferro silicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking, and can also be used as an alloying element additive in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel.
In the steelmaking industry, ferro silicon powder is often used as a heating agent for ingot caps to improve the quality and recovery rate of steel ingots. This is due to the fact that ferro silicon powder can release a large amount of heat when it is burned at high temperature.
Among various brands of ferro silicon, 75% ferro silicon is currently the most widely used one. In the steelmaking industry, about 3-5 kg of 75% ferro silicon is consumed for each ton of steel produced.
In traditional ferro silicon refining, silicon is reduced from silicon dioxide containing SIO2. Metallurgical coke is used as a reducing agent in ferro silicon smelting, and scrap steel is a regulator of ferro silicon.
