How to classified ferro silicon

Dec 18, 2025

Ferrosilicon, an indispensable alloying raw material in the metallurgical industry, comes in many varieties and can be classified in various ways, mainly by silicon content, by form, and by application.

1.Classification by Silicon Content: The core classification basis for ferrosilicon is its silicon content. Common ferrosilicon varieties have silicon contents of 45%, 65%, 72%, and 75%. Ferrosilicon with different silicon contents exhibits differences in physical and chemical properties, thus affecting its application areas. For example, high-silicon ferrosilicon (such as 72% and 75% silicon content) is often used as a deoxidizer and alloying additive in steelmaking processes due to its high reducing properties and thermal stability, effectively improving steel quality. Low-silicon ferrosilicon (such as 45% and 65% silicon content), on the other hand, is widely used in the foundry industry due to its lower cost and good casting performance, such as as an inoculant in the production of cast iron parts, improving the microstructure and properties of the castings.

2.Classification by Form: Ferrosilicon comes in various forms, mainly including lumps, granules, and powders. Lump ferrosilicon is usually larger, suitable for large-scale smelting equipment, and facilitates direct feeding. Granular ferrosilicon undergoes crushing and screening to achieve uniform particle size, facilitating precise batching and making it suitable for small and medium-sized foundries. It effectively improves production efficiency and product quality. Powdered ferrosilicon has fine particle size, large surface area, and high reactivity, primarily used in the production of special alloys and as an additive, such as in the production of ferrosilicon alloys and ferrosilicon-manganese alloys.

3.Classification by Application: Based on application, ferrosilicon can be divided into steelmaking ferrosilicon, foundry ferrosilicon, and special-purpose ferrosilicon. Steelmaking ferrosilicon is mainly used for deoxidation and alloying, improving the strength and toughness of steel. Foundry ferrosilicon acts as an inoculant and modifier, improving the microstructure and properties of castings. Special-purpose ferrosilicon, such as high-purity ferrosilicon and low-aluminum ferrosilicon, is produced according to specific needs, meeting the demands of high-end manufacturing and special materials fields.

Industry Standards and Precautions: When selecting ferrosilicon, relevant industry standards, such as GB/T 2272-2009 "Ferrosilicon," must be followed to ensure product quality meets requirements. At the same time, attention should be paid to the storage and transportation conditions of ferrosilicon to avoid moisture and contamination, so as not to affect its performance.
