What's the ferro silicon powder
Dec 16, 2025
Ferrosilicon powder is a powdery substance produced by grinding an iron-silicon alloy. Its main components include silicon, aluminum, calcium, and manganese, with a common grade being 75% ferrosilicon (containing 72%-80% silicon). Its melting point is approximately 1300℃. The particle size is typically 0-3mm.
In the steelmaking industry, this product is used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent. It reduces the oxygen content of molten steel by reacting silicon with oxygen to produce silicon dioxide, consuming 3-5 kg per ton of steel. This improves the strength, hardness, and magnetic properties of the steel.
In the foundry industry, it is used as an inoculant to promote graphitization of cast iron, and as a reducing agent for low-carbon alloys in ferroalloy production. Furthermore, ferrosilicon powder is used in the Pidgeon process for magnesium refining to replace metallic magnesium (consuming 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon per ton of magnesium), and in the manufacture of suspended phases in mineral processing, welding electrode coatings, and silicone chemicals. The steelmaking, foundry, and ferroalloy industries together consume over 90% of ferrosilicon production.
In addition, ferrosilicon powder is widely used in welding materials as an alloying element to improve weld quality. Store in a well-ventilated, dry environment, avoiding moisture and high temperatures. Ferrosilicon powder comes in various specifications, and different particle sizes and packaging forms can be provided according to customer requirements.
