Carbon Reinforcing Agent Grade Standards
Fixed Carbon Content.
Fixed carbon is the key component for carbon reinforcing agents to exert their carbon-reinforcing effect. Generally, carbon reinforcing agents for casting are classified into several grades based on their fixed carbon content. Common grades include those with fixed carbon contents of ≥90%, ≥92%, ≥95%, and ≥98%. For example, in precision casting, where high-quality castings are required, carbon reinforcing agents with a fixed carbon content of ≥98% are often selected to ensure stable carbon-reinforcing effects and fewer impurities, avoiding adverse effects on casting performance. In ordinary casting, carbon reinforcing agents with a fixed carbon content of ≥92% or ≥95% are more widely used, meeting the carbon-reinforcing requirements of general castings.
Volatile Matter Content.
Volatile matter content is also an important indicator of carbon reinforcing agent quality. Generally, high-quality carbon reinforcing agents have lower volatile matter content. For high-grade carbon reinforcing agents with a fixed carbon content of ≥98%, the volatile matter content is generally required to be ≤1.0%; for carbon reinforcing agents with a fixed carbon content of around 95%, the volatile matter content is usually controlled to be ≤2.0%. Lower volatile matter content helps reduce fumes and harmful gas emissions during smelting, while also improving the utilization rate of the recarburizer.
Ash Content.
Ash is a significant component of impurities in recarburizers. Different grades of recarburizers have strict limits on ash content. Recarburizers with a fixed carbon content ≥98% typically have an ash content ≤1.0%; recarburizers with a fixed carbon content of around 95% generally have an ash content ≤3.0%. Excessive ash content increases inclusions in castings, affecting their mechanical properties and surface quality. Therefore, strictly controlling ash content is crucial for ensuring casting quality.
Sulfur Content.
Particle Size.
Recarburizer particle sizes vary depending on the application and smelting equipment. Common particle size ranges include 0.5-1mm, 1-3mm, 3-5mm, and 5-8mm. In cupola furnace smelting, larger particle sizes of recarburizing agents, such as 3-5mm or 5-8mm, are generally selected to facilitate uniform distribution and complete combustion within the furnace. In electric furnace smelting, smaller particle sizes of recarburizing agents, such as 0.5mm, 1mm, or 1-3mm, are more commonly used, as they facilitate rapid dissolution and absorption, thereby improving recarburizing efficiency.
