Application of Silicon Carbon Alloys in Steelmaking
Silicon carbon alloys play several important roles in steelmaking. Firstly, as a complex deoxidizer, they are primarily used for diffusion deoxidation during the production of general carbon steels. This deoxidation method significantly reduces the deoxidation time, saving energy, improving steelmaking efficiency, reducing raw material consumption, minimizing environmental pollution, and improving working conditions.
Furthermore, silicon carbon alloys also contribute to carbon addition, which is crucial for enhancing the overall efficiency of electric arc furnaces.
During steelmaking, the silicon in the silicon carbon alloy reacts with oxygen, effectively removing oxygen from the molten steel and improving the hardness and quality of the steel. This reaction also prevents splashing, making the steelmaking process safer and more stable. Additionally, silicon carbon alloys promote slag formation, allowing oxides to agglomerate quickly for easier filtration, resulting in purer molten steel and significantly improved steel density and hardness.
Silicon carbon alloys also significantly influence the properties of steel. Silicon enhances the elasticity, yield strength, and tensile strength of steel; therefore, silicon carbon alloys are widely used in the production of spring steel. Adding an appropriate amount of silicon to heat-treated structural steel further improves its strength. Carbon in the silicon-carbon alloy is also important; as the carbon content increases, the yield strength and tensile strength of the steel also increase, but ductility and impact resistance decrease. Therefore, controlling the amount of silicon carbon alloy added allows for precise control of the steel's properties.
Furthermore, silicon carbon alloys can be combined with other elements such as molybdenum, tungsten, and chromium to enhance the corrosion and oxidation resistance of steel, producing heat-resistant steels with specific properties. Low-carbon steel containing 1-4% silicon has high magnetic permeability, making silicon carbon alloys widely used in the electrical industry for manufacturing silicon steel sheets.
