What is ferro silicon used for?

Ferro silicon is used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. Since silicon and oxygen are easily synthesized into silica, ferro silicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. Ferro silicon can also be used as an alloying element additive, and is widely used in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel.


Ferro silicon is an iron-silicon alloy made of coke, steel scraps and quartz as raw materials and smelted in an electric furnace. Ferro silicon is an indispensable deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry. In torch steel, ferro silicon is used for precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation.


Ferrosilicon (FeSi) is an alloy of iron and silicon, typically containing 15% to 90% silicon. It is widely used in various industries due to its unique properties. Here are the main uses of ferrosilicon:

1. Steelmaking & Cast Iron Production

  • Deoxidizer: Removes oxygen from molten steel to prevent defects (ferrosilicon with 45-75% Si is commonly used).

  • Alloying Agent: Adds silicon to steel and cast iron to improve strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance.

  • Graphitizer: Promotes graphite formation in cast iron, enhancing machinability and reducing brittleness.

2. Foundry Industry (Inoculant)

  • Used to modify molten iron, improving the microstructure of cast iron for better mechanical properties.

3. Magnesium Production (Pidgeon Process)

  • Ferrosilicon (with 75% Si) reacts with dolomite to produce magnesium metal.

4. Welding Electrode Manufacturing

  • Added to welding rods to improve arc stability and metal deposition.

5. Other Applications

  • Semiconductor Industry: High-purity silicon is extracted from ferrosilicon for electronics.

  • Hydrogen Production: Reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce hydrogen gas.

  • Dense Media Separation (DMS): Used in mineral processing due to its high density.
