The difference between industrial silicon and ferro silicon


In the industrial field, industrial silicon and ferro silicon are two important materials with significant differences between them.

 

First of all, in terms of composition, industrial silicon is known for its high purity. Its main component is silicon dioxide, and its purity can be as high as 99% or more; in contrast, ferrosilicon is composed of silicon and iron, with a silicon content of 70%-80% and an iron content of 20%-30%, and contains other elements such as manganese, calcium, and magnesium. In terms of application, industrial silicon is the darling of the high-tech industry and is widely used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials, silicon wafers, optical fibers, solar cells, and special glass; while ferrosilicon mainly plays a role in steel smelting, as a deoxidizer and alloying element to improve the performance of steel. In terms of production technology, the production of industrial silicon requires a chemically pure material process, which has strict requirements for high temperature, high pressure, and high energy consumption; ferrosilicon is mainly obtained through blast furnace smelting, and its furnace temperature, furnace pressure, and energy consumption are relatively low. In addition, there are also differences in the physical properties of the two. Industrial silicon is brittle and hard, has excellent electrical properties and thermal stability, and is resistant to high temperatures and corrosion. Ferrosilicon is more resilient and has good plasticity, processability, and castability. Therefore, when selecting materials, it is necessary to accurately match them according to actual needs.
