Ferro silicon Classification Basis
Oct 15, 2025
Ferro silicon is classified primarily based on silicon content and impurity element content, as follows:
1.Classification by Silicon Content
High-Silicon Ferro silicon: Silicon content is above 87%, used for smelting high-quality steel.
Ordinary Ferrosilicon: This includes 72#, 75#, and 65# grades, with silicon content generally ranging from 45% to 95%. It is widely used in metallurgical applications.
Low-Aluminum Ferro silicon: Ferro silicon has a certain amount of aluminum added to it, with the aluminum content marked. It is used for specific applications, such as improving the corrosion resistance of steel.
High-Purity Ferro silicon: Ferro silicon has a high silicon content and extremely low impurity content (such as aluminum, calcium, carbon, titanium, phosphorus, and sulfur). It is commonly used in specialty steel smelting, semiconductor materials, and other fields.
2.Classification by Smelting Method
Blast Furnace Ferro silicon: Produced in blast furnaces in the early days, it has a low silicon content.
Electric Furnace Ferro silicon: Produced primarily in electric furnaces today, it has a higher silicon content.
3.Classification by Application
Ferro silicon for Steelmaking: Used as a deoxidizer and alloying additive.
Ferro silicon for Casting: Used as an inoculant and spheroidizer.
Ferro silicon for Magnesium Metallurgy: Used as a reducing agent.
4.Classification by Impurity Elements
Low-Carbon Ferrosilicon: Has a low carbon content and is used to avoid reintroduction of carbon during the manufacture of stainless and electrical steels.
Low-Titanium (High-Purity) Ferro silicon: Has a low titanium content and is used to avoid inclusions in electrical steel and certain specialty steels.
Low-Aluminum Ferro silicon: Has a low aluminum content and is used to avoid the formation of hard aluminum oxide inclusions in various types of steel.
