Ferro silicon, as a kind of ferro alloy
Mar 10, 2025
Ferro silicon, as a kind of ferroalloy, its core components include silicon (Si) and iron (Fe). It is made of coke, steel scraps and quartz (or silica) as raw materials and refined by electric furnace smelting. During the smelting process, a byproduct called silicon slag is produced. Since silicon can combine with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (SiO2), which is an indispensable deoxidizer in the steelmaking process, ferro silicon is often used as a source of silicon. By adding ferro silicon for deoxidation, the quality and recovery rate of steel can be improved. For this reason, ferro silicon plays a vital role in smelting and other industries that require deoxidation.
In addition, ferro silicon is divided into four different grades: 75#, 72#, 65# and 45# to meet the needs of different industries and applications.
1. In the steelmaking industry, ferro silicon is widely used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent to improve the quality and recovery rate of steel.
2. At the same time, in the cast iron industry, ferro silicon also plays an important role and is used as an inoculant and spheroidizer to improve the performance of cast iron.
3. In the production process of ferroalloys, ferro silicon is used as an important reducing agent to participate in chemical reactions to promote the synthesis of ferroalloys.
4. In the process of Pijiang process for magnesium smelting, 75# ferrosilicon is widely used in the high-temperature smelting of magnesium metal, and its role is to replace the magnesium in CaO.MgO. For every ton of magnesium metal produced, about 1.2 tons of ferro silicon are consumed, which fully reflects the key role of ferro silicon in the production of magnesium metal.
5. In addition, ferro silicon has many other applications. Ferro silicon powder that has been ground or atomized can be used as an effective suspension phase in the mineral processing industry. At the same time, in the welding rod manufacturing industry, ferro silicon is used as a coating for welding rods to ensure welding quality. In addition, high-silicon ferro silicon is also widely used in the chemical industry, such as for the manufacture of silicone and other products, providing key raw materials for multiple industries.
