Different uses of ferro silicon
May 19, 2025
Ferro silicon, a carefully refined iron alloy made of iron and silicon, plays an indispensable role in the industrial field.
Its raw materials include coke, steel scraps and quartz (or silica), which are carefully smelted in an electric furnace to produce an iron-silicon alloy. Silicon and oxygen easily combine to form silicon dioxide, which makes ferro silicon an ideal deoxidizer in the steelmaking process. While deoxidizing, a large amount of heat is released when SiO2 is generated, which also has a positive effect on increasing the temperature of molten steel. In addition, ferro silicon is also widely used as an alloying element additive, providing key support for the manufacture of low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. At the same time, in ferro alloy production and chemical industry, ferro silicon is also often used as a reducing agent, playing its unique role.
The addition of silicon significantly improves the elasticity and magnetic conductivity of steel, making an important contribution to the optimization of steel performance. The manganese element effectively reduces the brittleness of steel, improves its hot working properties, and enhances the strength, hardness and wear resistance of steel. In the steelmaking process, manganese can also act as a desulfurizer and deoxidizer, ensuring the production of high-quality steel by improving the physical properties of steel. It is worth mentioning that there is currently no other element that can replace manganese in steel production.
