Why does ferrosilicon powderize?
Improper aluminum, phosphorus and calcium content in ferrosilicon will promote ferro silicon powderization. When the aluminum and phosphorus content increases to a certain value at the same time, this ferro silicon is prone to powderization in the air with high humidity. Some data indicate that the phosphorus content in ferro silicon is less than 0.04% and the aluminum content is less than 3%, and it is not easy to produce powderization. The effect of silicon content on ferro silicon powderization has been observed and studied. It is preliminarily believed that ferro silicon with low silicon content (mostly waste) is often easy to powderize.
In addition, the cooling speed after pouring also affects the ferrosilicon powderization. If the cooling speed is slow and the segregation degree of silicon is large, it is easy to produce powderization. For the same reason, the thickness of the ferrosilicon ingot is thicker, it is easy to produce powderization, and it is not easy to produce powderization when it is thinner. Therefore, the silicon content of ferrosilicon should be strictly controlled and not too low. To control the aluminum, phosphorus and calcium content of ferrosilicon, better raw materials should be used, especially high-ash coke should not be used to reduce the aluminum and phosphorus content. To reduce the calcium content of ferrosilicon, the addition of lime should be minimized during smelting.
