Silicon carbon alloys, also known as high carbon silicon, are a new type of alloy widely used in steelmaking and other industrial fields. Silicon carbon alloys are superior to traditional metallurgical materials such as ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, and carburizing agents in several aspects.
The primary use of silicon carbon alloys is as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in steelmaking. In converter, electric arc furnace, and casting processes, silicon carbon alloys can effectively remove oxides from molten steel, improving the quality and properties of the steel. Furthermore, silicon carbon alloys can form compounds with other elements in steel, playing a strengthening and stabilizing role.
Main uses of silicon carbon alloys:
1. Deoxidizer in steelmaking
Silicon carbon alloys can serve as an effective deoxidizer in steelmaking, improving steel quality by removing oxides from molten steel. In converter, electric arc furnace, and casting processes, silicon carbon alloys can effectively eliminate oxides in molten steel, resulting in high quality steel.
2. Alloying Agent
Silicon carbon alloys can form compounds with other elements in steel, playing a role in strengthening and stabilizing. Silicon and carbon have an affinity for alumina and can undergo a reduction reaction on aluminum to obtain two compounds, SiAl2 and SiAl4. SiAl2 can be further synthesized into other Si-Al alloys.
3. Improving Steel Properties
Silicon carbon alloys can improve the physical properties of steel, such as increasing strength and corrosion resistance, thus improving the overall quality of the steel.
4. Desulfurization in Slag
Sulfur in molten steel and oxides formed during the production process precipitate in the slag. The carbon in silicon carbon alloys can form sulfides with sulfur, thereby reducing the sulfur content in the molten steel and the oxide content in the slag.
