What Is The Melting Point Of Ferro Silicon
Apr 29, 2026
Generally, the melting point of ferro silicon is between approximately 1410℃ and 1460℃. Specifically, ferro silicon with a silicon content of 30% has a melting point of approximately 1410℃, while ferro silicon with a silicon content of 75% has a melting point of approximately 1460℃. The melting point of ferro silicon is affected not only by silicon and carbon content, but also by pressure and impurity content. When ferro silicon contains a large number of impurities, its melting point will increase significantly. Furthermore, the melting point of ferro silicon will also increase under high pressure. The melting point of ferro silicon produced by different manufacturers will also vary.
Ferro silicon is an iron-silicon alloy composed of iron and silicon. It is produced by smelting coke, steel scrap, and quartz (or silica) in an electric furnace. Because silicon and oxygen readily combine to form silicon dioxide, ferro silicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. Simultaneously, the large amount of heat released during the formation of SiO2 contributes to both deoxidation and increasing the temperature of molten steel. Meanwhile, ferro silicon can also be used as an alloying element additive, widely applied in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel, and electrical silicon steel. In ferroalloy production and the chemical industry, ferro silicon is commonly used as a reducing agent.
Ferro silicon is an indispensable deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry. In blast furnace steel, ferro silicon is used for precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation. Iron used in brick billets is also used as an alloying agent in steelmaking. Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly improve its strength, hardness, and elasticity, increase its magnetic permeability, and reduce the hysteresis loss of transformer steel.
General steel contains 0.15%-0.35% silicon, structural steel contains 0.40%-1.75% silicon, tool steel contains 0.30%-1.80% silicon, spring steel contains 0.40%-2.80% silicon, stainless acid-resistant steel contains 3.40%-4.00% silicon, heat-resistant steel contains 1.00%-3.00% silicon, and silicon steel contains 2%-3% silicon or higher.
