Brief History
In 1858, Shepard found a metal with a composition of 87.28% Fe and 11.01% Si in a meteorite and suggested naming it ferrosilicon.
In 1810, the Swede J.J.Brezelius smelted five types of ferrosilicon containing 2.2% to 9.3% Si in a forge using iron filings, quartz and pine charcoal.
According to reports by E.J.Davis and A.D.Gate, the United States produced ferrosilicon containing 6% to 16% Si in a blast furnace at Globe Steel Company in 1872.
In 1875, A.Pourcel smelted ferrosilicon containing 10% to 18% Si in a blast furnace at Ternois.
In 1899, DuCholmol smelted ferrosilicon with 25% to 50% Si in an electric furnace at the Holcomrock Plant of Wilson Aluminum Company in the United States and obtained a US patent. Later, electric arc furnaces replaced blast furnaces to produce ferrosilicon, and mainly produced 75% Si and 50% Si ferrosilicon.
Before the 1950s, Chongqing, China used electric furnaces to test produce ferrosilicon, and Anshan produced ferrosilicon in 400-1200kVA electric furnaces.
In 1952, Fushun Aluminum Plant began to use 6000kVA electric furnaces to produce ferrosilicon with 75% Si.
In 1956, Jilin Ferroalloy Plant began to use 12500kVA electric furnaces to produce ferrosilicon with 45% Si, and later produced FeSi75.
