BRICS, because it quotes the English initials of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Because the word is similar to the English word brick (Brick), it is called "BRICS". The land area of the BRICS countries accounts for 26.46% of the world's total area, and the population accounts for 41.93% of the world's total population. It is estimated that in 2021, the total economic volume of the five countries will account for 25.24% of the world, and the total trade volume will account for 17.9% of the world. In 2022, the voting rights of the five countries in the World Bank will be 14.06%, and the total share in the International Monetary Fund will be 14.15%.
In 2001, Jim O'Neill, the chief economist of Goldman Sachs, put forward the concept of "BRIC" for the first time, specifically referring to the world's emerging markets. In 2006, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India and China held their first meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, which opened the prelude to the BRICS cooperation. In June 2009, leaders of BRICS countries held their first meeting in Yekaterinburg, Russia, promoting BRICS cooperation to the summit level. In 2011, South Africa officially joined the BRICS countries, and the BRICS countries expanded into five countries, and the English name was BRICS. Since 2009, BRICS leaders have held 14 meetings and 9 informal meetings.
The symbol of the BRICS countries is a circle surrounded by strips of the representative colors of the national flags of the five countries, which symbolizes the cooperation and unity of the "BRICS countries". In December 2017, the BRICS countries were selected as the "Top Ten Buzzwords in Chinese Media in 2017".
From August 22 to August 24, 2023, the fifteenth meeting of BRICS leaders will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
On the morning of August 24, 2023 local time, the 15th meeting of BRICS leaders held a special press conference, announcing the expansion of BRICS.
