Ferrosilicon (FeSi) is an iron-silicon alloy primarily composed of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si), typically containing 15% to 90% silicon. It has several important industrial applications, mainly in the steel and foundry industries. Here are its key functions:
1. Deoxidizer in Steelmaking
Ferrosilicon is added to molten steel to remove oxygen (deoxidation), preventing porosity and improving steel quality.
It reacts with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (SiO₂), which floats to the surface as slag.
2. Alloying Agent
Silicon improves steel properties like strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance.
Used in manufacturing stainless steel, electrical steel (for transformers/motors), and silicon steel sheets.
3. Inoculant in Cast Iron Production
Helps control graphite formation in cast iron, improving machinability, ductility, and strength.
Prevents the formation of brittle cementite (iron carbide).
4. Hydrogenation Inhibitor
In welding electrode coatings, ferrosilicon helps prevent hydrogen pickup, reducing weld cracking.
5. Magnesium Production (Pidgeon Process)
Used to reduce magnesium from dolomite ore in the production of magnesium metal.
6. Other Uses
Dense Media Separation (DMS): Ferrosilicon powder is used in mineral processing to separate materials by density.
Thermite Reactions: Acts as a heat source in certain metallurgical processes.
