What is FeSi used for
Jul 16, 2025
Ferro silicon (FeSi) is an alloy of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si), typically containing 15% to 90% silicon. It is widely used in various industries due to its metallurgical and chemical properties. Here are the main uses of ferro silicon:
1. Steelmaking & Cast Iron Production
Deoxidizer: Removes oxygen from molten steel to prevent porosity and improve quality.
Alloying Agent: Adds silicon to steel, enhancing strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance.
Graphitizer: Helps form free graphite in cast iron, improving machinability and reducing brittleness.
2. Foundry Industry
Used in cast iron production to control silicon content, which improves fluidity and casting properties.
3. Manufacturing of Silicon & Other Alloys
A raw material for producing high-purity silicon (used in solar panels & electronics).
Used in magnesium production (via the Pidgeon process).
Added to aluminum alloys to improve strength and castability.
4. Welding Electrode Coatings
Ferro silicon powder is used in welding rods to stabilize the arc and improve weld quality.
5. Other Applications
Hydrogen Production: Reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce hydrogen gas.
Military Uses: Used in some incendiary devices due to its pyrophoric properties when finely powdered.
Key Benefits of Ferro Silicon
Cost-effective compared to pure silicon.
Enhances metal properties (strength, corrosion resistance, magnetic characteristics).
Improves efficiency in steel and foundry industries.
