What are carbon raisers made of?

Carbon raisers are important additives used in industries such as steelmaking and casting to increase the carbon content. They are mainly made of the following materials:

1• Graphitized petroleum coke: This is one of the most commonly used raw materials for carbon raisers. Petroleum coke is a byproduct of petroleum refining. After graphitization treatment at temperatures above 2500℃, the carbon atoms inside rearrange to form a hexagonal lattice structure similar to graphite, thus transforming it into graphitized petroleum coke. This material has advantages such as high fixed carbon content (usually above 98%), low sulfur content, and few impurities. When added during steelmaking and casting, it can rapidly increase the carbon content in molten iron or steel with minimal impact on the quality of the molten iron or steel.

2• Natural graphite: Natural graphite is a mineral composed of carbon elements, and is divided into flake graphite and amorphous graphite. Flake graphite has a complete crystal structure, good lubricity and conductivity, and a high carbon content, making it commonly used in high-end casting and special steel production. Abrasive graphite is relatively inexpensive, has good dispersibility, and can also be used as a carburizing agent after processing, making it suitable for cost-sensitive casting industries.

3• Anthracite: High-quality anthracite is also an important raw material for producing carburizing agents. After washing, calcining, and other processes to remove impurities and increase the fixed carbon content, anthracite can be made into coal-based carburizing agents. These carburizing agents are relatively inexpensive, but compared to graphitized petroleum coke, they have a lower fixed carbon content and relatively higher sulfur and impurity content, and are often used in ordinary casting industries where carbon content requirements are not extremely high.

4• Coke: Coke, made primarily from bituminous coal through high-temperature dry distillation, can also be used as a carburizing agent. However, the carbon content and properties of coke vary significantly depending on the raw materials and production processes, and its ash and volatile matter content are relatively high, requiring strict control of the addition amount and usage conditions.
