High carbon silicon (silicon carbon alloy) and carbon silicon (silicon carbide) are two different materials, differing primarily in their chemical composition and uses.
1.Chemical Composition
High carbon silicon (silicon carbon alloy) consists of silicon (Si), carbon (C), and small amounts of aluminum (Al) and calcium (Ca). The silicon content is typically 50% to 70%, and the carbon content is 10% to 30%.
Carbon silicon (silicon carbide) consists solely of silicon and carbon (SiC) and is a compound semiconductor material.
2.Applications
High carbon silicon is primarily used for deoxidation and alloying in converter steelmaking. It can replace traditional alloys such as ferrosilicon and recarburizers, reducing steelmaking costs and improving steel quality.
Carbon silicon (silicon carbide) is used in high-temperature, high-frequency, and high-power devices, such as semiconductor materials and bulletproof armor, due to its high hardness, high-temperature resistance, and high-pressure resistance.
3.Performance Differences
High carbon silicon has a lower density than steel but is harder, has a melting point of approximately 1680°C, and possesses superior electrical and thermal conductivity compared to steel.
Carbon silicon (SiC) has a band gap three times that of silicon, a thermal conductivity four to five times that of silicon, and a breakdown voltage eight to ten times that of silicon.
