Are there different grades of silicon?

Silicon can be classified into multiple grades based on different classification standards, primarily into the following two categories:

1. Purity
Metallurgical-grade polysilicon (industrial silicon): 98%-99% purity, primarily used in industrial applications (such as aluminum alloy production).

Solar-grade polysilicon: 99.9999% purity (6N-9N), a core material for the photovoltaic industry. According to national standards, it is categorized into special, first, second, and third grades, with decreasing purity and photovoltaic conversion efficiency.

Electronic-grade polysilicon: 9N-11N purity (99.9999999%-99.999999999%), used in semiconductor manufacturing.

2. Form and application
Block silicon: Categorized into dense (smooth surface, used in monocrystalline silicon production), cauliflower (medium quality), and coral (rough surface, lowest price), primarily used in multicrystalline silicon wafer production. ‌

Granular silicon: Approximately 2 mm in diameter, it can be used directly without crushing, but is susceptible to contamination and requires vacuum packaging. ‌

Different grades of silicon have specific applications in photovoltaics, semiconductors, metallurgy, and other fields. For example, solar-grade polysilicon is primarily used in photovoltaic cells, while electronic-grade polysilicon is used in integrated circuit manufacturing.
