What's The Production Technology Of Ferro Silicon

May 20, 2026

The main process for producing ferro silicon is electric arc furnace smelting, which utilizes a carbonaceous reducing agent to reduce silica at high temperatures to produce an iron-silicon alloy.

Core Process Flow

Raw Material Preparation: The main raw materials are silica (SiO₂ > 97%), carbonaceous reducing agent (coke/semi-coke), and iron source (steel scrap/iron ore), which need to be crushed, screened, and washed.

Electric Arc Furnace Smelting: The raw materials are added to a submerged arc reduction furnace. At a high temperature of 1700–1900℃, silica is reduced by carbon to form silicon, which combines with iron.

Refining and Casting: High-purity ferro silicon requires ladle refining (such as slag refining or oxygen refining) to remove impurities, followed by casting, cooling, crushing, and quality inspection.

Key Technologies and Trends

Equipment Optimization: Submerged arc furnaces are developing towards larger, enclosed, and rotating shell designs to improve thermal efficiency and environmental performance. Raw Material Innovation: Exploring the use of low-grade raw materials, industrial waste, and scrap to extract ferrosilicon, thereby reducing costs and pollution.

Intelligent Control: Applying a microcomputer-aided control system to optimize power parameters and batching, reducing energy consumption and improving quality. Modern production places greater emphasis on energy conservation, emission reduction, and resource recycling; products with different silicon contents require matching closed or open electric furnaces.
