What's The Main Uses Of Ferro Silicon

Feb 11, 2026

Ferro silicon is an iron alloy composed of iron and silicon, produced by smelting silica, coke, and steel scrap in an electric furnace. It is widely used in various industrial sectors.

1. **Steelmaking Deoxidizer**
Ferro silicon is primarily used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in the steelmaking industry. Silicon has a strong chemical affinity for oxygen, effectively removing oxygen from molten steel, generating silicon dioxide and releasing heat, thus increasing the steel's temperature.

This process enhances the strength, hardness, and elasticity of the steel, improving its internal structure.

In the final stage of steelmaking, ferrosilicon is used for precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation, ensuring stable steel quality. 3-5 kg of ferrosilicon is consumed per ton of steel produced, with 75% ferrosilicon being the most commonly used grade.

2. **Foundry Additive**

In the cast iron industry, ferro silicon is used as an inoculant and spheroidizing agent. It prevents the formation of carbides in iron, promotes graphite precipitation and spheroidization, and improves the mechanical properties of cast iron.

In ductile iron production, ferro silicon is a key additive, improving the material's casting performance and shock resistance.

Ferro silicon is also used as a heating agent in steel ingot caps, utilizing its high-temperature combustion exothermic properties to improve ingot quality and recovery rate.

3. Ferroalloy Raw Material
Ferro silicon is used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy production, especially suitable for producing low-carbon ferroalloys. High-silicon ferro silicon has a low carbon content and strong reducing power, effectively reducing other metal oxides.

In the Pidgeon process for magnesium smelting, ferro silicon is used in the high-temperature smelting process, consuming 1.2 tons of ferro silicon for every ton of metallic magnesium produced.

Ferro silicon powder is also used in the mineral processing industry, welding electrode manufacturing, and the chemical industry.

In these fields, it serves as a raw material for products such as suspended phases, welding electrode coatings, and silicon hydride.

As an important industrial raw material, ferro silicon plays an irreplaceable role in modern metallurgical industry, with applications covering multiple key areas such as steel smelting, casting, and alloy production.

With the continuous development of industrial technology, the production process and application technology of ferro silicon are also continuously optimized, providing higher-quality material support for various industries. In the future, the demand for specialty ferro silicon, such as low-aluminum, low-titanium, and low-carbon ferrosilicon, will drive its development towards higher purity and greater diversification.
