What's The Different Types Of Carburizers
Mar 30, 2026
A carbon carburizing agent is a carbon-containing substance added to compensate for the carbon loss during steelmaking.
During the steelmaking process, due to the long smelting and holding times, the carbon content in the molten iron may be significantly reduced, falling short of the theoretically expected carbon value. To compensate for this carbon loss, a carbon carburizing agent is added.
The main functions of a carbon carburizing agent are:
1. Compensating for the carbon loss during steelmaking, increasing the carbon content in the molten iron.
2. Enhancing the nucleation ability of the molten iron, refining grains, and improving the tensile strength, hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue limit of castings.
3. Improving the distribution of carbon and alloying elements in the casting metal, resulting in a denser, more uniform microstructure and eliminating segregation during casting.
4. Reducing slag production, simplifying slag removal operations, and improving casting efficiency.
5. Improving the fluidity of the molten metal, stabilizing the composition of the molten iron, and preventing segregation.
6. Significantly reduces white cast iron formation, improves machinability, and enhances mechanical properties after use.
Types of Carburizing Agents
1. Petroleum Coke Carburizing Agent
Made from calcined and purified petroleum coke, it appears as round or polygonal granules. It is an ideal carburizing material and reaction intermediate in metallurgy, chemical industry, machinery, and power industries, and has a wide range of applications.
2. Metallurgical Coke Carburizing Agent
Commonly used in cupola furnaces for coke. Besides smelting, its role is also studied in the application of carbon as a raw material for different metals.
3. Calcined Coal Carburizing Agent
Mainly produced in Shizuishan, Ningxia, and Wuhai, Inner Mongolia. The general composition is 90-93% C and 0.3-0.5% S. Mainly used in steelmaking enterprises, and some foundries use it for gray cast iron.
4. Graphitized Carburizing Agent
Mainly produced in Shandong and Henan provinces. The main materials are graphitized petroleum coke and graphitized electrodes. The typical composition is 98-99.5% carbon and 0.05-0.03% sulfur. It is mainly used in ductile iron. Its characteristics include rapid absorption and high carbon content with low sulfur content.
5. Natural Graphitized Carburizing Agent
It is mainly composed of natural graphite, with a carbon content of 65%-99%. It is primarily used in steel mills, not foundries.
