What's The Applications Of High Carbon Silicon/silicon Carbon Alloy

Apr 01, 2026

Silicon carbon alloy, also known as high carbon silicon, is a new type of converter alloy. Its main components include silicon (Si) and carbon (C), along with small amounts of aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), and trace impurities such as manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S). The silicon content is typically between 50% and 70%, while the carbon content is between 10% and 30%. Higher silicon content expands the application range of silicon carbon alloys, but also increases their price.

Physical Properties

Density: Silicon carbon alloys have a lower density than steel but higher hardness, exhibiting high strength, high hardness, and high toughness.

Electrical and Thermal Conductivity: Silicon carbon alloys also have superior electrical and thermal conductivity compared to steel, giving them significant advantages in manufacturing cemented carbide cutting tools, automated machinery parts, and high-speed steel.

Melting Point: Silicon carbon alloys have a high melting point, reaching approximately 1680℃, allowing them to operate stably under high temperature and pressure conditions, making them suitable for manufacturing high-temperature resistant materials and high-temperature alloys.

Chemical Properties

Oxidation Resistance and Corrosion Resistance

Silicon carbon alloys possess good oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, remain stable at high temperatures, and exhibit a low coefficient of thermal expansion and good thermal stability. These properties allow silicon carbon alloys to operate and exist stably in various media.

Deoxidation Properties

Since silicon carbon alloys contain silicon, when added during steelmaking, the silicon reacts with oxygen, deoxidizing the molten steel and improving its hardness and quality. Furthermore, the silicon in silicon carbon alloys has a good affinity for oxygen, preventing splashing in the molten steel after addition.

Slag Collecting Properties

Silicon carbon alloys also have the advantage of slag collection. Adding a certain proportion of silicon carbon alloy to molten steel allows oxides from the steelmaking process to quickly agglomerate, facilitating filtration and resulting in purer steel, significantly increasing its density and hardness.

Applications of Silicon Carbon Alloys

Firstly, it can replace ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, and carburizing agents in the deoxidation and alloying process of converter smelting. This alloy can consistently improve the quality of molten steel, enhance product quality, and improve new product properties.

Secondly, using silicon carbon alloys can reduce the amount of alloy added, lowering steelmaking costs and thus increasing economic benefits.

Silicon carbon alloys are mainly used in the deoxidation alloying process of converter smelting. For a long time, the variety of alloys used in converters has been relatively limited, while traditional silicon-manganese alloys and ferrosilicon resources are becoming increasingly scarce, with rising market prices leading to increased costs for converter steelmaking. The emergence of silicon carbon alloys provides a new option for converter steelmaking, effectively solving these problems.
