Carbon additives are made from various raw materials and produced using diverse processes. They include wood-based carbon, coal-based carbon, coke-based carbon, and graphite-based carbon, each with numerous subcategories. High-quality carbon additive generally refer to graphitized carburizing agents. Under high-temperature conditions, the carbon atoms are arranged in a graphite-like microstructure, hence the term graphitization.

 

Graphitization reduces the impurity content of the carbon additive, increases its carbon content, and reduces its sulfur content. When used in casting, carburizing agents can significantly increase the amount of scrap steel used and reduce or eliminate the need for pig iron.

 

In electric arc furnace smelting, the carbon additive should be added along with the scrap steel and other furnace charge. Small doses can be added to the surface of the molten iron. However, large-scale addition should be avoided to prevent excessive oxidation, resulting in ineffective carburizing and insufficient carbon content in the castings. The amount of carburizing agent added depends on the proportions and carbon content of other raw materials.

 

Different types of cast iron require different types of carbon additive. The carbon additive itself is selected from pure carbon-containing graphitized substances to reduce excessive impurities in the cast iron. Choosing the right carbon additive can reduce casting production costs.
