The origin of Women's Day

On March 8, 1908, 1,500 women marched in New York City, demanding shorter working hours, higher wages, the right to vote, and the prohibition of child labor. Their slogan was "bread and roses"; bread symbolized economic security and roses symbolized greater good quality of life. In May, the Socialist Party of America decided to make the last Sunday in February the National Women's Day.

In 1910, German sociologist Clara Zetkin suggested that a day should be designated as "International Women's Day" to commemorate the American garment workers' strike. The proposal was accepted by the International Conference of Women Sociologists in Copenhagen, but no specific date has been set.

In 1917, Russian women called for a strike on February 23 for "bread and peace", protesting poor working conditions and food shortages. This day is the last Sunday of the month according to the Julian calendar used in Russia, which translates to March 8 in the Gregorian calendar widely used in Europe.

In 1924, the Communist Party of China held its first "March 8th" Commemorative Conference in Guangzhou.

In 1949, the Central People's Government of my country made a decision to designate March 8 as Women's Day. On this day, women all over the country had a half-day holiday, and various ceremonies and celebrations were held.

In December 1977, the United Nations adopted a resolution declaring that the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and Peace, on a certain day of the year, in deference to the history and traditions of the member states, and for the United Nations, International Women's Day, March 8 , and since 1975.
