High carbon ferro silicon's description
Sep 01, 2025
High carbon ferrosilicon is a highly cost-effective composite deoxidizer.
I. Background
In the steelmaking process, ferroalloys are not only used for alloying, but a significant portion is also consumed as deoxidizers. With the advancement of steelmaking processes, particularly the increasing proportion of converter steelmaking and improvements in electric and open-hearth furnace smelting, the proportion of ferroalloys consumed as deoxidizers has increased, resulting in a decrease in ferroalloy recovery rates. Using expensive ferroalloys as deoxidizers is not only uneconomical but also unscientific. Therefore, developing a low-cost deoxidizer with excellent deoxidizing properties to replace composite alloys and certain ferroalloys is of great economic value.
II. Composition and Properties
The main components of high carbon ferrosilicon are silicon (Si) and carbon (C), accounting for 45-68% and 15-20% by weight, respectively. High carbon ferrosilicon also comes in a variety of particle sizes, such as 10-50mm, 3-10mm, and 0-3mm.
Silicon (Si) has deoxidizing and desulfurizing properties, while carbon (C) enhances carburizing and deoxidizing. The presence of these two elements in high-carbon silicon is intended to improve steel quality. High-carbon silicon leverages the unique characteristics of silicon and carbon, exploiting the beneficial effects of carbon in the deoxidation process. This results in a composite deoxidizer based on elements with particularly strong oxygen affinity. This deoxidizer possesses strong deoxidizing properties, and the resulting deoxidized products easily float and are removed, preventing contamination of the molten steel.
III. Application Advantages
Excellent Deoxidizing Performance: As a composite deoxidizer, high carbon silicon outperforms traditional deoxidizers such as ferrosilicon alloys. It not only effectively reduces the oxygen content in steel but also improves the morphology and distribution of inclusions, thereby enhancing steel quality.
Easy to Use: High carbon silicon is extremely easy to use, eliminating the significant investment and stringent process requirements of off-site refining. It can be added directly to molten steel for deoxidation.
Low Cost: Compared to other composite alloy and ferroalloy deoxidizers, high-carbon silicon offers a lower cost. This not only reduces steelmaking costs but also improves efficiency.
Environmental benefits: The deoxidation products generated during the deoxidation process by high carbon silicon easily float and are removed, preventing contamination of the molten steel. Furthermore, it prevents the harmful effects of inclusions such as Al₂O₃, contributing to environmental protection.
In summary, high carbon silicon, as a cost-effective composite deoxidizer, has broad application prospects in steelmaking. It not only improves steel quality but also reduces costs and increases efficiency. Furthermore, high carbon ferrosilicon is highly convenient to use, requiring no complex processes or equipment. Therefore, high carbon ferrosilicon is expected to become an important deoxidizer of choice in future steelmaking.
