What's The Short Introduction Of High Carbon Silicon

May 29, 2026

Composition of High Carbon Silicon:

It is mainly composed of silicon (Si) and carbon (C), with silicon typically comprising 50%-70% and carbon typically 10%-30%.

In addition, high carbon silicon contains small amounts of elements such as aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), and iron (Fe), as well as trace impurities such as manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S).

Properties of High Carbon Silicon:

Physical Properties: High carbon silicon has a lower density than steel but higher hardness, exhibiting high strength, high hardness, and high toughness. Its electrical and thermal conductivity are also superior to steel.

Chemical Properties: High carbon silicon possesses good oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, remaining stable at high temperatures. Furthermore, it has a low coefficient of thermal expansion and good thermal stability.

Applications of High Carbon Silicon:

High carbon silicon can replace ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, and carburizing agents in the deoxidation and alloying process of converter smelting. In steelmaking, high carbon silicon can improve steel quality, enhance product quality, reduce alloying requirements, lower steelmaking costs, and increase economic benefits.

In casting, high carbon silicon can be used for modification treatments during the casting process, altering grain size, microstructure, and mechanical properties of castings, thereby improving their hardness and wear resistance.

In non-ferrous metals, high carbon silicon can be used for alloying treatments of aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and other non-ferrous metals, improving their strength, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Furthermore, high carbon silicon can also be applied in aerospace, electronics, and chemical industries as an additive or reinforcing agent in high-temperature alloys, functional materials, and ceramic materials.
