What's The Application Of Silicon Carbon Alloy
Aug 19, 2026
Silicon carbon alloys are a relatively new type of alloy used in converter smelting, a product of the rapid development of the metallurgical industry in recent years. Compared to traditional metallurgical materials, they are less expensive, yet can effectively replace conventional materials such as ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, and carburizing agents in converter deoxidation alloying processes.
When silicon carbon alloys are added during steelmaking, the silicon element reacts with oxygen in the molten steel, achieving deoxidation and thus improving the hardness and overall quality of the steel. Simultaneously, due to the good affinity between silicon and oxygen, the reaction in the molten steel is stable after the alloy is added, reducing splashing and increasing operational safety.
Furthermore, silicon carbon alloys possess excellent slag-collecting properties. Adding them to molten steel in a certain proportion promotes the rapid aggregation and agglomeration of oxides generated during smelting, facilitating subsequent removal and effectively purifying the molten steel, thereby improving its density and hardness.
This alloy also exhibits excellent temperature resistance. Its addition during smelting helps to increase furnace temperature, improve the conversion efficiency of ferroalloys, and accelerate the reaction rate between molten steel and various elements, optimizing the overall smelting effect.
