What's The Application Of Ferro Silicon
Apr 13, 2026
Ferrosilicon is an alloy primarily composed of silicon (Si) and iron (Fe), smelted in an electric furnace using coke, steel scrap, and quartz (or silica) as raw materials.
Its applications include:
1.Steelmaking Industry:
* **Deoxidizer:** In steelmaking, excess oxygen needs to be removed to produce steel with better strength and toughness. Silicon and oxygen readily combine to form silicon dioxide. Ferro silicon is commonly used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking; adding an appropriate amount can promote deoxidation and achieve the required oxygen content. For example, in the production of ordinary carbon steel and low-alloy steel, ferro silicon is an essential deoxidizer, effectively reducing the oxygen content in the steel, minimizing internal defects caused by oxygen, and improving steel quality.
* **Increasing Steel Temperature:** Because the formation of SiO2 releases a large amount of heat, deoxidation can simultaneously increase the temperature of molten steel, reducing energy consumption. For steelmaking enterprises, this not only improves production efficiency but also saves costs to some extent. Common ferro silicon particle sizes used in steelmaking enterprises are standard blocks of 10-60mm and 10-70mm.
Ferro silicon can be used as an alloying element additive, widely applied in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel, and electrical silicon steel. Adding ferro silicon to low-alloy structural steel improves its strength and corrosion resistance; in spring steel, silicon increases its elastic limit, yield strength, and fatigue limit; in bearing steel, silicon helps improve its hardness and wear resistance; in heat-resistant steel, silicon enhances its high-temperature oxidation resistance; and in electrical silicon steel, silicon reduces iron loss, increases magnetic permeability, and improves electromagnetic properties.
2. Foundry Industry: Deoxidation: Similar to steelmaking, in the casting process, excess oxygen needs to be removed to obtain higher-quality castings. Ferro silicon can also play a deoxidizing role, ensuring the internal quality of castings. Commonly used ferro silicon particle sizes in foundries are 1-3mm and 2-8mm.
Improving Casting Properties: The addition of ferro silicon can improve the microstructure and properties of castings. For example, adding an appropriate amount of ferro silicon to cast iron can improve its strength, hardness, and wear resistance, while also improving its casting properties, such as fluidity and shrinkage, making castings easier to form and reducing defects.
3. Ferroalloy Production and Chemical Industry: Reducing Agent: In ferroalloy production and the chemical industry, ferro silicon is commonly used as a reducing agent. For example, in the production of other ferroalloys, ferro silicon can reduce metal oxides to elemental metals. In some chemical synthesis reactions, ferro silicon can also participate as a reducing agent, reducing certain compounds to the desired products.
