What's High Carbon Silicon

Aug 21, 2026

High carbon silicon, also known as silicon carbon alloy, is a new type of alloy used in converter steelmaking. Its primary constituents are silicon (Si) and carbon (C), accompanied by small amounts of elements such as aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), and iron (Fe), as well as trace impurities like manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S). Silicon content typically ranges from 50% to 70%, while carbon content ranges from 10% to 30%. A higher silicon content broadens the alloy's application range but also increases its price.

Chemical Properties

Oxidation and Corrosion Resistance

High carbon silicon exhibits excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance; it remains stable at high temperatures and possesses a low coefficient of thermal expansion along with good thermal stability. These characteristics enable it to function and remain stable in various media.

Deoxidation Performance

High carbon silicon contains silicon. When added during the steelmaking process, the silicon reacts with oxygen to deoxidize the molten steel, thereby enhancing the steel's hardness and quality. Furthermore, due to the strong affinity between the silicon in the alloy and oxygen, the addition of the material does not cause splashing in the molten steel.

Slag Aggregation Performance

High carbon silicon also offers slag-aggregating benefits. Adding a specific proportion to the molten steel causes oxides formed during the process to rapidly clump together, facilitating filtration and purification. This significantly improves the density and hardness of the resulting steel.

Applications of High Carbon Silicon

1.It can replace ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, and recarburizers in the deoxidation and alloying processes of converter steelmaking. This alloy consistently improves molten steel quality, enhances product quality, and imparts new performance characteristics to the product.

2.using high carbon silicon allows for a reduction in the quantity of alloy additives required, thereby lowering steelmaking costs and increasing economic efficiency.

3.High carbon silicon is primarily used for deoxidation and alloying in converter steelmaking. Historically, the variety of alloys available for converters has been limited; meanwhile, supplies of traditional silicon-manganese and ferrosilicon alloys have become increasingly scarce and market prices have risen, leading to higher costs for converter steelmaking. The emergence of high carbon silicon offers a new option for converter steelmaking, effectively addressing these issues.
