Is Carbon Additive An Hazardous Material?
Apr 22, 2026
Carbon additive are not classified as hazardous materials.
According to national standards and industry specifications, the main components of carbon additive are graphite carbon or other carbonaceous materials. They are chemically stable, non-flammable, non-explosive, and non-toxic, and therefore not listed in the hazardous chemicals list.
However, the following points should still be noted during storage and use:
1. Store in a dry, well-ventilated environment to avoid moisture and clumping;
2. Keep away from strong oxidizers to prevent chemical reactions;
3. Take precautions in dusty environments to avoid inhalation.
Carbon additive are widely used in the foundry industry, mainly to adjust the carbon content of molten iron or steel to improve the mechanical properties and surface quality of castings. Depending on the production process, carbon additive can be classified as graphite carbon additive, petroleum coke carbon additive, and artificial graphite carbon additive, etc. Among them, graphite carbon additive are the preferred choice in the foundry industry due to their high fixed carbon content (usually ≥98%), low sulfur content (≤0.5%), and high absorption rate (≥85%).
