A Cost-effective Composite Deoxidizer-high Carbon Silicon
Oct 16, 2026
High carbon ferrosilicon is a cost-effective composite deoxidizer primarily used for deoxidation during the steelmaking process.
I. Background
In steelmaking, a significant portion of ferroalloys is consumed as deoxidizers, in addition to their role in alloying. With the increasing proportion of converter steelmaking and improvements in electric arc furnace and open-hearth furnace smelting processes, the consumption ratio of ferroalloys used for deoxidation has risen, leading to lower ferroalloy recovery rates. Relying on expensive ferroalloys as deoxidizers is neither economical nor scientifically optimal. Therefore, developing a low-cost deoxidizer with excellent deoxidation performance-capable of replacing composite alloys and certain ferroalloys-holds significant economic value.
II. Composition and Characteristics
The primary constituents of high carbon ferrosilicon are silicon (Si) and carbon (C), with weight percentages of 45–68% and 15–20%, respectively. Available particle size specifications include 10–50 mm, 3–10 mm, and 0–3 mm.
Silicon possesses deoxidizing and desulfurizing capabilities, while carbon contributes to both recarburization and deoxidation. High carbon ferrosilicon leverages the elemental properties of silicon and carbon, utilizing carbon's active role in the deoxidation process to form a composite deoxidizer based on elements with a strong affinity for oxygen. This deoxidizer offers strong deoxidation capabilities; the resulting deoxidation products float to the surface for easy removal and do not contaminate the molten steel.
III. Application Advantages
Excellent Deoxidation Performance: As a composite deoxidizer, it outperforms traditional ferrosilicon alloys. It effectively reduces oxygen content in the steel, improves the morphology and distribution of inclusions, and enhances overall steel quality.
Ease of Use: It does not require the substantial investment or strict process controls associated with ladle refining; it can be added directly to the molten steel for deoxidation.
Low Cost: Compared to other composite alloys and ferroalloy deoxidizers, it is more cost-effective, thereby reducing steelmaking costs and improving production efficiency.
Environmental Friendliness: Deoxidation products float to the surface for easy removal without contaminating the molten steel. Additionally, it mitigates the harmful effects of inclusions such as Al₂O₃, offering environmental benefits.
In summary, high carbon silicon, as a cost-effective composite deoxidizer, holds broad application prospects in the steelmaking process. It improves steel quality, reduces production costs, and enhances efficiency, all while being easy to use and requiring no complex processes or equipment. High carbon silicon is poised to become a key deoxidizer choice in steelmaking operations in the future.
