A Deoxidizer Alloy Silicon Carbon Alloy
Oct 14, 2026
Silicon carbon alloy is a novel alloy material used in converter steelmaking. It serves as a substitute for ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, and recarburizers, while also reducing the consumption of deoxidizers; it is primarily employed in the deoxidation and alloying stages of the converter smelting process. As a deoxidizing alloy for converters, silicon carbon alloy lumps deliver consistent performance, resulting in steel grades that surpass those produced via traditional methods in terms of chemical composition, mechanical properties, and internal quality standards. This alloy offers stable performance and multiple advantages: it improves molten steel quality and enhances the properties of the final product, while simultaneously reducing the required alloy dosage, thereby lowering steelmaking costs and boosting economic efficiency.
For a long time, the range of alloys used in converters remained unchanged, characterized by a relatively limited structural variety. For instance, Q195 and Q235 steel grades typically utilized a combination of MnSi, FeSi, SiAlCaBa, SiC, and recarburizers, whereas HRB335 and HRB400 grades relied on MnSi, FeSi, AlSi, and recarburizers. However, as supplies of silicomanganese and ferrosilicon have tightened and market prices have risen, the cost of converter steelmaking has increased, squeezing profit margins. Furthermore, the recovery rates of traditional alloys are heavily influenced by converter operations; factors such as tapping weight, end-point temperature, and slag carryover can cause significant fluctuations in alloy composition within the finished steel. This leads to instability in the chemical composition of the steel grades and lower pass rates for internal quality control metrics.
As silicon carbon alloy is a relatively new product, the number of manufacturers is currently limited, with production concentrated primarily in the Anyang region of Henan Province. Given its ability to effectively replace certain other alloys and the steadily growing demand from steel mills, the market outlook for silicon carbon alloy is promising. Optimizing the product mix of silicon carbon alloys helps reduce production costs, improve molten steel quality, and lower alloy consumption, while also driving adjustments to the overall alloy structure used in steelmaking.
