What is ferro silicon material?

Oct 17, 2025

Ferro silicon is a type of ferroalloy composed primarily of iron and silicon. It is used in various industries, including steelmaking and casting.
Ferro silicon can contain varying amounts of silicon (typically ranging from 15% to 90%) depending on the production method. It is usually produced by reducing silica with carbon materials and iron in an electric arc furnace.

The role of ferro silicon in steelmaking
In steelmaking, ferro silicon is used for:

1.Product performance – Ferro silicon is a convenient way of adding silicon as an alloying element, to improve various properties of the final steel.
2.Slag reduction – In the manufacture of stainless steels, the presence of silicon reduces chromium oxides in the melt, improving recovery of metallic chromium.
3.Deoxidation – Ferro silicon provides quick-acting removal of oxygen from the melt, so avoiding the presence of inclusion-forming oxides and avoiding loss of desirable elements.
4.Fuel – Some steel mills add ferro silicon to the melt so that it can be burnt off to get heat into the furnace, and so reduce energy costs.

Bulk Density: Approximately 6.8 g/cm³ to 7.2 g/cm³ depending on its specific composition.
Melting Temperature: Ranges from 1200°C to 1380°C depending on the silicon content and impurities.
Boiling Point: Around 2355°C for all types of Ferrosilicon.
Color: Solid Ferro silicon ranges in color from silver-gray to dark gray, depending on the silicon content and oxidation state.
Combustibility: Combustible in the form of dust particles but stable in bulk or granular form.
