What is ferro silicon?

Ferro silicon is used in the steelmaking industry as a deoxidizer and alloying agent, and in the foundry industry as an inoculant and nodulizing agent. Since steelmaking and foundry operations are fundamental heavy industries in my country, it is essential to understand the raw materials and additives used within these sectors.

Ferro silicon is an iron alloy composed of iron and silicon.

Also known as "silicon-iron," it is an iron-silicon alloy produced by smelting coke, steel scrap, and quartz (or silica) in an electric furnace. It is widely used in the steelmaking, foundry, and other industrial sectors.

Uses of ferro silicon:

1. Used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in the steelmaking industry. To achieve the required chemical composition and ensure the quality of steel, deoxidation must be performed during the final stages of the steelmaking process. Because silicon has a strong chemical affinity for oxygen, ferro silicon serves as a potent deoxidizer, facilitating both precipitation and diffusion deoxidation. Adding a specific amount of silicon to steel significantly enhances its strength, hardness, and elasticity. Consequently, ferro silicon is employed as an alloying agent in the production of structural steel (containing 0.40%–1.75% silicon), tool steel (0.30%–1.8% silicon), spring steel (0.40%–2.8% silicon), and silicon steel for transformers (2.81%–4.8% silicon). Furthermore, it helps improve the morphology of inclusions and reduces the content of gaseous elements in molten steel; this is an effective, modern technique for enhancing steel quality, lowering production costs, and economizing on iron usage. It is particularly well-suited for the deoxidation requirements of continuous casting. In practice, ferro silicon has proven not only to meet steelmaking deoxidation standards but also to offer desulfurization capabilities, high density, and strong penetrating power.

Additionally, in the steelmaking industry, ferro silicon powder is often used as a heating agent for ingot hot tops-leveraging the fact that it releases a significant amount of heat when burned at high temperatures-thereby improving the quality and yield of steel ingots.

2. Used as an inoculant and nodulizer in the cast iron industry. Cast iron is an important metallic material in modern industry; it is less expensive than steel, easier to melt and smelt, possesses excellent casting properties, and offers significantly better vibration-damping capacity than steel. Ductile iron (nodular cast iron), in particular, exhibits mechanical properties that reach or approach those of steel. Adding a certain amount of ferro silicon to cast iron helps prevent the formation of carbides and promotes the precipitation and nodularization of graphite. Consequently, ferro silicon serves as a vital inoculant (facilitating graphite precipitation) and nodulizer in the production of ductile iron.
