Where is ferro silicon used
Jun 18, 2025
Ferro silicon (FeSi) is a ferroalloy composed of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si), typically containing 15–90% silicon. It is widely used in various industries due to its deoxidizing, alloying, and heat-resistant properties. Here are the key applications:
1. Steel Industry (Major Use – ~70-80% of FeSi)
Deoxidizer: Removes oxygen from molten steel to prevent porosity and improve quality.
Alloying Agent: Enhances steel properties like hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance (e.g., in stainless steel, electrical steel).
Inoculant: Used in cast iron to improve graphite formation, enhancing machinability and durability.
2. Foundry & Cast Iron Production
Helps control graphite formation, improving strength and wear resistance in cast iron parts (e.g., engine blocks, pipes).
3. Magnesium Production
Used in the Pidgeon process to produce magnesium metal from dolomite.
4. Welding Electrodes & Fluxes
Added to welding materials to improve arc stability and metal deposition.
5. Semiconductor & Solar Industry
High-purity silicon derived from ferro silicon is used in solar panels and electronics.
6. Other Uses
Defense: Used in armor-piercing projectiles due to its hardness.
Hydrogen Production: Acts as a reducing agent in some chemical processes.
