Smelting Metallic Silicon

Smelting metallic silicon is to extract and refine silica through a furnace smelting process to obtain high-purity metallic silicon.

The specific smelting process includes the following steps:

1. Raw material preparation: Select high-purity silica as raw material, and crush and grind the silica.

2. Ore reduction: Put the raw silica and reducing agent (such as coke, charcoal, etc.) into a high-temperature electric furnace or petroleum coke oven for reduction reaction. The reduction reaction can reduce the oxide in the silica to metallic silicon.

3. Melting and refining: After the reduced silicon is smelted, an appropriate amount of flux and fluorescent agent are added to improve the purity and fluidity of silicon. The molten silicon is removed from impurities by a ballast at high temperature to improve the purity. In the ironmaking process, limestone, dolomite, etc. are often added to the solution to eliminate the cold silicon segregation phenomenon.

4. Pouring and cooling: After the smelting is completed, the metallic silicon is poured into the casting mold and cooled to solidify into a metallic silicon block of the desired shape.

5. Processing and purification: The solidified metal silicon block is mechanically processed, such as cutting and grinding, to obtain metal silicon of the required specifications and shape. If higher purity metal silicon is required, further purification treatment is required, such as solvent extraction, condensation method, etc.

Through the above steps, metal silicon can be smelted and purified into high-purity products, which are often used in industrial fields such as electronics, photovoltaics, and semiconductors.
