The production process of silicon metal
Silicon metal (also known as industrial silicon or metallurgical-grade silicon) is produced by reducing silica (SiO₂) with carbon materials (such as coal, coke, or wood chips) in a submerged arc furnace (SAF). The process involves high-temperature carbothermic reduction and yields silicon with a purity of 98–99%.

The main reaction occurs in an electric arc furnace at 1,700–2,000°C:
Chemical Reaction:

1. Mining and Refining: Silicon is typically found in the form of silica in quartz, which is mined from the earth. The silica is then refined to produce pure silicon through various processes including crushing, washing, and smelting.
2. Blast Furnace Method: The most common method for producing silicon metal is through the use of a blast furnace. In this method, a mixture of silica, carbon, and a reducing agent such as iron is loaded into the furnace. The furnace is heated to over 2,000 degrees Celsius, which causes a chemical reaction that reduces the silica to silicon.
3. Electric Arc Furnace Method: This method involves heating a mixture of silica and carbon electrodes in an electric arc furnace. The intense heat causes a chemical reaction that produces silicon metal.
4. Chemical Vapor Deposition Method: This method involves the decomposition of a silicon-containing gas, such as silane, using a heated filament. The silicon vapor then condenses on a substrate and solidifies into silicon metal.
